Some quick notes for myself and this AU:

Asami is a fire bender, but also a repressed one. She doesn't broadcast her ability, and doesn't even realize she can fire bend. (At least in most of the AUs, scenarios, threads, etc.)
Her ability first activated when the Agni Kai Triad broke into the Sato estate. Since the incident resulted in the death of her mother, Yasuko Sato, Asami has done her best to forget and bury the details of what happened. Asami likely tried to fight back, even as a smol fire bender, and this resulted in a fire that burned down a large chunk of the Sato estate and the Yasuko dying in the blaze.
I flip flop on if her father is aware of her ability and lies about it, or remains completely ignorant since Asami never told him. Again, depends on the RP scenario!
Because she represses her fire bending, it results in patches of discomfort and even flare ups in her chi. She might show fevers, burning and sensitive skin, fires dimming or flaring around her, and things occasionally catching flame if she's touching them. All of this is more likely if she's under a large amount of stress.
If you're thinking "this sounds a lot like an extended coming out of the closet metaphor but with fireballs" then you are 100% correct!
